\nAfter posting a comment, why does it still say it’s in moderation ? Isn’t this supposed to be automated ?\n\n

Yes, it’s automated and there is no need for the wordpress admin to approve a good comment.
\nBut to validate a comment for foul language and slangs, which is called a toxicity check, it takes time, like many many seconds, to detect it.

\nWhy does it take so much time for a toxicity check ?\n\n

The toxicity check connects to TensorFlow, here using TensorFlowJS, which is a Google’s product and the data sets used are on Google’s servers.

\nSo this connects to some 3rd party backend-service ?\n\n

Yes, it connects to an API at toxicity.co.in which is again, my (free) service which runs on Deno at Deno Deploy – deno.com which in turn goes to Google for returning the results of toxicity. Sometimes it takes a minute or more to return the result and at times, it even times out. If it times out the admin has to manually validate the comment in wp-admin.

\nWill this plugin remain free forever ?\n\n

I want it to remain free forever and open-sourced.
\nThere is so much of free stuff on the internet and even open-sourced.
\nI want to be part of the community and don’t intend on commercializing it.
\nBut if toxicity service at my deno.com account take a hit on many requests, I will then have to shell out minimum $10/mo ($2 per million requests per month, $0.30/GiB outbound data transfer)
\nEven then that’s okay and I can fund that minimum amount, but if it goes beyong $10 a month, then I will seek funding of some sort.

This plugin implements ModerateHatespeech.com’s machine learning API to detect and flag potentially toxic and hateful comments. A configurable threshold can be set and comments with scores above that threshold will be sent to the moderation queue for administrative approval.

Toxic comments are becoming a major challenge to have meaningful online discussions.

This plugin uses a pre-trained toxic classifier from TensorFlow to classify a comment as toxic. See more technical details on the quality of the model here.

Once a comment is flagged as toxic, the comment is blocked and the plugin alerts the comment author and asks to modify the text before trying again.

In the default Settings->Discussion page you can enable the detection of toxic comments and define the threshold confidence level for the prediction.

How did you train the predictive model?

We didn’t. We are using a pre-trained model provided by tensorflow itself.

Can I improve or personalize the prediction by manually training the toxicity classifier on my site?

No. The classifier is pre-trained. But you could build your own classifier based on the [code to create and train] (https://github.com/conversationai/conversationai-models/tree/master/experiments) this one

What external JavaScript scripts does the plugin import?

The plugin relies on tensorflow.js to analyze the comment on the browser. Therefore, the plugin enqueues tensorflow, the sentence encoder and the toxicity model.
\nNevertheless, the JS code to execute the actual comment classification is only added to single post pages with comments (and the toxicity settings) enabled.
